Log Cutting and Sawmill
11 Logs should be prepared and cut based on Quarter sawn Timber Cutting Technique to ensure minimum shrinkage during kiln drying and avoid warping and possible natural cracking in the future.
During log cutting, all cut panels should be free of the wood center core or the “heart” of the wood. Please see diagram below:
FIGURE 1.1 THESE ARE 3 EFFECTIVE TECHNIQUES TO ENSURE WARP-FREE WOOD PLANKS.
a. All Logs must be cut in two halves to expose the heart of the wood and ensure that these are taken out or ripped of the freshly cutted timber.
b. All fresh cut timber must be treated with wood treatment to ensure that the wood is bug free inside and outside.
c. All planks with wood heart/ core must be ripped to take away all heart of the wood.
Proper Wood Treatment
Proper wood treatment against bugs and molds must be conducted to ensure prevention of pinholes on post delivery.
The Following guidelines must be followed:
a. All sawn timber must undergo wood treatment after air drying stage prior to kiln drying.
b. DTM(ex) is the approved wood treatment chemical to be used on all timber as scheduled before Kiln Drying. Approved chemical wood protectant is subject to alternative wood protection depending on availability.
c. 1liter per 400 liters of water is the proper dilution ratio for wood Protectant to ensure maximum protection.
d. Timber must be dipped to the 1:4 diluted wood protectant mix to ensure maximum absorption and protection to the timber.
e. All Dried timber stock must be sprayed with wood protectant diluted in kerosene to avoid increase of wood moisture content. Periodic spray application (once a month) to ensure maximum protection on all wood stocks must be followed prior to usage.
Wood Treatment Chemical Issuance and Enforcement Procedure
Periodic wood treatment chemical issuance will be enforced to all vendors to ensure all wood material for usage is being treated.
The Following guidelines must be followed:
a. Vendors will be issued a monthly supply of Wood treatment chemical at their own cost to be later deducted to their collectables.
b. A minimum of 1 liter per month will be issued to all vendors. Volume of chemical issuance will be depending on vendor’s delivery volume. Standards are as follows:
a. 1 liter of wood protectant per I container item capacity every month.
b. Additional 1 liter of wood protectant per 1 container additional load capacity.
c. Quarterly review of wood protectant issuance will be conducted to ensure all vendors are using the wood treatment chemical
d. In the event a certain vendor has not acquired the chemical for 45 days, all product Delivered / deliveries within the last 15 days will be put on review and payments will be put on hold pending final disposition from Quality Assurance Officer and Country Manager.
e. Random sight visits will be held to check on vendors if they are using the wood treatment chemical
